Green Smoothie Cleanse - Jane's day 2

Breakfast
Hot Pink Smoothie II (4 cups)
11.1 oz. carton coconut water
1/2 beet (peeled)
1 large carrot
1/4 cup raw cashews.
1/2" fresh ginger (peeled)
1 gala apple (cored)
1 cup antioxidant mix (cherries, blueberries, raspberries, pomegranate, strawberries)

This smoothie suited my tastes better than the one I had for yesterday's breakfast. I was going to put in some purple cabbage, but forgot.  I also have been taking my cashews directly out of the freezer. I think I might try soaking them a few hours first to see if that helps with the creaminess. I'll try again tomorrow.

Lunch
Purple Berry Smoothie (4 1/2 cups)
11.1 oz. carton coconut water
2 large handfuls baby organic kale
small wedge purple cabbage
1 cup frozen mixed berries
1/4 lemon
1 orange
1 banana

I decided to have 4 smoothies today since doubling the recipe on my lunch smoothie yesterday didn't turn out like I'd hoped. I usually use spinach in this smoothie, but used kale this time. I also added some purple cabbage, which didn't seem to change the taste.I don't always put lemon in this smoothie, but I wasn't in the mood for something too sweet, so it seemed like a good addition. This was a much purpler and tastier smoothie than yesterday's lunch.

Lunch II
Avocado Green Smoothie (6 cups - I drank 4 1/2 cups)
2 cups water
large handful of spinach
1/2 avocado
1/3 cup pumpkin seeds (soaked)
1 mini cucumber
1 cup green grapes
1 cup frozen pineapple

This smoothie sounded like it would be good.  I threw in the pumpkin seeds I'd been soaking as an afterthought. With both the avocado and the pumpkin seeds it was super creamy - too creamy. It wasn't very flavorful either. I finally threw the last cup or so away because it was too filling and I want to save some room for my dinner smoothie.

Dinner
Cherry and Broccoli Sprout Smoothie (3 cups)
1 cup frozen cherries
2 1/2 cups broccoli sprouts
1 banana
1 cup coconut water

All I can say is WOW!! (and not necessarily in a good way)  I guess that's part of experimenting. This was the maiden voyage of my new sprouting lid. I chose to start with broccoli sprouts because I'd read such good things about them. I used 3 Tbsp. of broccoli seed and - Voila - 4 1/2 days later I have 3 cups of sprouts. I asked Mark if he wanted to try some. He didn't. Then I got the brilliant idea to rinse and dry my sprouts in my salad spinner.  I lost about 1/2 cup that way. That was definitely a sad mess to clean up. That left me with 2 1/2 cups.

I figured that frozen cherries and a banana would more than mask any flavor that the sprouts might have. Not Even. That smoothie was hot Hot HOT. It wasn't too unpleasant as long as I wasn't expecting a sweet cherry smoothie.  I think in the future I'll only use one cup in a very large smoothie.

Today has been much easier than I thought it would be. I went to group power and had plenty of energy. Ruth and I were going to go on a 10k bike ride after group power, but I begged off. I wasn't sure if I'd make it all the way, not because I was worried about stamina, I was just worried about not having a bathroom!

I haven't been hungry at any point today. I didn't even crave solid food unless I was looking in the fridge for my green smoothie ingredients or preparing meals for Mark and Dad. I think I only drank 4 extra glasses of water.

  1. I think your pictures are even better today! Thanks for sharing your experiments. I might try out the new and improved hot pink smoothie soon. Too bad about the avocado smoothie and the broccoli sprouts! Your adventure with the salad spinner made me laugh :) I need to start using my sprouting lid.
