Thursday 9/15

I have been really good. I've been going to the Courthouse most days and taking kickboxing and group active classes. I've been walking and riding my bike. I've been eating a diet filled with fruits, veggies, nuts, whole grains and legumes.

Until yesterday.

Yesterday I went to kickboxing and got home about 11:30am. I haven't been having my green smoothie until after class, so it was nearly lunch time by the time I had my breakfast. A little while after I had my green smoothie I was fantasizing about all the cut up salad veggies I had leftover in my fridge.

Tuesday night we had a progressive dinner for our joint YM/YW activity. I chose to have the salad course at our house. We had salad greens and bowls with all sorts of cut-up veggies (a la Sweet Tomatoes). At the end there were croutons, sunflower seeds, craisins, etc. We also had fruit salad.

Anyway, yesterday afternoon I made this Huge Salad with a little ranch, some sunflower seeds and some croutons. The croutons were sooooo good. I went and got the bag so I could put some more on my salad. I ended up eating the whole bag of croutons!

As soon as I'd eaten the croutons I started thinking about the 1/2 bag of Skittles in my cupboard. It had been in my cupboard for weeks and I hadn't even thought about them except in passing when I opened the cupboard and saw them there. Suddenly, though, all I could think about was eating them. I went over to the cupboard got them out, and had eaten 1/2 of what was left of the bag before I could stop myself and throw the rest of the bag in the trash.

What happened? Maybe a little of it was eating breakfast so late. Another problem was eating the croutons. They are a hyper-tasty salty processed snack that excited my taste centers and made me want something more. I made the conscious choice to eat what I did, but there was some major compulsiveness going on there.

Today I am back on track and determined not to allow this to put me in a downward spiral. Enough chance for that when I travel to Utah for Alan's wedding.

Anyway, today I went on a bike ride at Minto Brown after group active. After my normal loops I went on one of the back trails. It was so beautiful today and in the middle of the off trail part is an area of blackberries that stretches along the trail for about a kilometer. Almost no one goes back in that part of the park. I got off my bike and started eating some of the plumpest, sweetest blackberries I'd ever had. There were tons of them and they just fell into my hands. I ate my fill and realized that this was a much better way to recreationally eat than the SAD stuff I had yesterday.
